Rescue Box: An Easy Craft to Save an Animal's Life

2023-07-01

(CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS) Recently, Wild Care Cape Cod, the non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center, posted on Facebook about a heartwarming story. They had received a call from a young man who had found an injured chipmunk.

Naturally, the center, who has accepted over 30,000 animals into their care, was willing to take in the hurt chipmunk. When the young man arrived at the rehabilitation center, Wild Care noticed that the chipmunk was tucked into a Rescue Box. Not only that, but the Rescue Box was one he made at a Wild Care's Wildlife Baby Shower the previous year!

How to Make a Rescue Box

Making a rescue box to keep in your car or home is an easy way to ensure you will be ready to help out any wildlife in need that you may come across. It is also a wonderful activity to do with children!
The directions are simple. For practicality, all you need to do is punch air holes into a large shoe or boot box and fill the box with a few necessary supplies.

However, if you want to make it a more enjoyable activity for yourself or children, you are encouraged to decorate the box with drawings and stickers. And don't forget to write the phone number for your local wildlife helpline somewhere on the box!

Wild Care Cape Cod's Number is: 508-240-2255

Things to Keep in Your Rescue Box

Wild Care Cape Cod recommends you keep the following four things in your rescue box so you can be prepared for an animal emergency.

  • Paper towels: To line the bottom of the box.
  • A Rice Sock: To provide warmth for the animal.
  • Gloves: To use while handling the animal.
  • Goggles: To protect your eyes while handling the animal.

Wild Care also offers the following advice:

"WILD ANIMALS ARE AFRAID OF US. Please keep animals in a dark, quiet place and don't disturb them. NO TOUCHING.
Call Wild Care and bring animals to us for care as soon as possible. The sooner we can help, the better chance they have.
Never give food or water to a wild animal you have rescued."
