According to the National Fire Protection Association, you should have a smoke detector installed in every sleeping room in your house. In many places, having these smoke detectors in place is actually the law. That’s especially true of rooms where your kids sleep. If you’re looking for an easy-to-install smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm for your kid’s nursery, check out the First Alert combination smoke and CO alarm.

First Alert’s detector is super easy to install. The process took me all of five minutes. The detector comes with a removable backplate, as well as mounting screws and drywall anchors. I screwed the plate into the ceiling in my kids’ nursery, put batteries (it takes standard AA batteries, which are included) into the detector itself, and mounted it onto the ceiling plate with an easy twist.

The detector isn’t too big, and looks unobtrusive. Smoke detectors are such a standard part of bedrooms these days that you wouldn’t even notice it was there unless you were looking for it.

One of the nice things about the First Alert detector is that it’s battery powered. That means you can install one anywhere, and you don’t need to worry about hard-wired connections. You’ll have to swap out the batteries about once per year (the alarm will chirp when it’s running low), but the detector itself lasts up to 7 years, so you get plenty of life out of your smoke detector investment.

Another nice feature is the combo of a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide alarm. According to the University of Connecticut, carbon monoxide is a “silent killer” which can prove deadly, yet can’t be smelled or seen. The First Alert detector helps to protect your family from this silent threat. It’s an essential thing to have, especially if you heat your home with natural gas or use gas appliances.

The First Alert combination detector costs about $40. That’s less than $6 per year when you figure that the detector lasts 7 years. It’s a small price to pay to help keep your kids safe. If you buy the First Alert detector online, there may be higher shipping fees, since smoke detectors sometimes require special shipping.

I’m glad to have the peace of mind of installing the First Alert detector, and I plan to get more for other rooms of my house.
