Only Electronic Cars In California

Gas prices tend to be higher in California than in most other states.

This situation is because of limited access to refineries on the West Coast. But it is expensive to construct such facilities. And other factors make building an oil refinery unfavorable. (source)

Thus, officials in California are putting forward an alternative approach. Electric cars. The state has announced a proposal to ban new gas-fueled automobiles by 2035. The plan got unveiled by clean-air regulars. It will hike the sale of electric and zero-emission vehicles. Meanwhile, the policy will see the phasing out of gasoline-fueled vehicles. (source)

The proposal by the California Air Resource Board has the following conditions:

  • It mandates that 35% of new passenger vehicle sales use battery or hydrogen power by 2026.
  • This percentage will increase to 68% by 2030.
  • By 2035, 100% of automobile sales be net-zero emissions.
  • The rule does not ban people from owning gas vehicles or selling them on the used market.

This shift in the transportation sector to cleaner energy is a plan to combat climate change in the state. Vehicles account for 40% of pollution in California. Last year, the county had sales of electric vehicles rise by 12.4%, a jump from 7.8% in 2020. (source)

The board will vote on the proposal in August. About 15 states, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, have similar clean-car rules. (source)
