About 60% of diabetic patients complain of feeling tired, according to a 2014 study. Your body needs a constant source of energy. Yet, your energy declines faster the more sugar you consume. Insulin is the hormone that regulates your sugar levels. And the amount of sugar in your body goes up with inadequate insulin production.
Research evidence also points out that high sugar levels cause frequent sleep disruptions. These sleep disturbances happen because your kidneys overcompensate by making you urinate more.
High Sugar Levels Also Lead to Weak Immunity
High blood sugar also makes you more vulnerable to infections like the common flu. A researcher at Case Western Reserve found that it interrupts your immunity mechanism. That's because dicarbonyls, destructive molecules, get released when sugar levels are high.
The study says two dicarbonyls — methylglyoxal (MGO) and glyoxal (GO) — changes cell structures. This change weakens your body's natural defense system. Thus, fungi, bacteria, and germs invade your body with ease. A weak immune system makes you more likely to get sick.
How Does Insulin Work
Insulin transports glucose into cells from the bloodstream. When there is insulin resistance or not enough, the sugar stays in the bloodstream. The body has to try alternative methods of energy production.
So, your body splits adenosine triphosphate, ATP, at the cellular level. When your ATP is low, you become tired.
High sugar levels do not only affect your skin. It also affects your immune system, energy levels, and sleep routine.
