A bittersweet end. A candy store loved by Honolulu locals announces it will close via social media. Financial troubles were the reason for the decision.
Brand fans are sad. But welcomed the discounts on all items. After the news broke, lines formed by the door. Families stood outside the establishment to score their favorite candy at low prices. The location closure occurs on May 24.
The owner said several issues contributed to the store's financial problems.
Mari Kimoto explained, "My mom worked so hard the last 20 years. The pandemic, the rent increases, inflation, and worker shortages and supply chain issues have been hard."
The social media post read, "First we’d like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the aloha and support for the past 20 years! We have met so many kind-hearted people through this business, and we are forever grateful."
Kimoto owns the Samurai Snacks Aiea store with her family. She asks for continued support during this difficult time. A clearance sale is underway to clear out the store's inventory.
Kimoto pointed out that other family-owned shops in the area were struggling. She hopes people buy more from small and local businesses in the community.
