President Biden wants support to renew the enhanced child tax credit (CTC) payments. The money would help parents. And it is a part of the family policies in his budget unveiled this week.
Biden's 2024 proposed budget features many plans to aid families. A primary factor is the reinstatement of the CTC to 2021 amounts. So, parents would get $3,600 per child without the American Rescue Plan.
The federal benefit is $2,000. Biden wants it raised to $3,600 per child under age six and $3,000 per child ages six and up. The reasons behind the change are understandable; to help families cope with high inflation.
The 2021 boost pushed millions of American families out of poverty.
Anna Aurilio is the federal campaign director at the Economic Security Project Action. Anna said, "We were really pleased to see that the White House is redoubling its efforts to support this direct cash payment program."
Another proposed permanent change to the CTC is making it 100% refundable. So, people would remain eligible "even if their tax liability was less than the credit amount."
The plan calls for seven paid sick days for all workers. Family and medical leave would be 12 weeks. The proposal also requests expanded access to affordable childcare, free preschool, and Medicaid home and community-based services. Older people staying home due to Medicaid would give relief to family caregivers.
Biden stated, "It’s going to help millions of parents go to work, knowing their children are being taken care of.
Getting Congress to support the proposal will be hard.
