Reports on Friday revealed that a San Francisco resident has been arrested in relation to the tragic death of a beloved Oakland bakery owner. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged 19-year-old Ishmael Burch with murder and robbery in the case involving Jen Angel, the proprietor of Angel Cakes in Oakland.

The incident occurred on February 6 when Angel, 48, was sitting in her parked car near the Wells Fargo on Webster Street at approximately 12:30 p.m. An individual broke into her vehicle and absconded with her personal belongings, as reported by the Oakland Police Department. In an attempt to retrieve her possessions, Angel engaged in a struggle with the perpetrator and was ultimately thrown onto the pavement.

Emergency medical services swiftly arrived at the scene, providing immediate assistance to Angel before transporting her to a nearby hospital. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries on February 9.

Angel established Angel Cakes in 2008 and relocated the business to a distinctive pink building on Fifth Street in 2016, previously home to T.J.s Gingerbread House, a Cajun restaurant. Before venturing into the bakery industry, Angel worked as a book publicist and was the founder and publisher of Clamor magazine, a publication that focused on radical culture and politics.

Friends and family fondly remember Angel as an advocate for social movements and an ardent anarchist. In light of the tragedy, her loved ones expressed a desire for the perpetrators to be held accountable through restorative justice, favoring alternatives to incarceration.

"While grieving the loss of Jen, we strive to honor her wishes and continue her work. Jen did not believe in resorting to state violence, punitive measures, or imprisonment as effective or just solutions to address social violence and inequality," stated the family and friends in a message shared on a GoFundMe campaign established following the incident.
