The Story Behind Chief Black Kettle & Oklahoma's Washita Battlefield

The Story Behind Chief Black Kettle & Oklahoma's Washita Battlefield Black Kettle was a praised and revered Indian Chief which had settled with his people in the Oklahoma Territories. Known for his peaceful nature, he led his people during a time of relocation where communications had broken down many times between tribes and the settlers in the areas. As a result of these issues, on a cold winter day his people were ambushed by George Custer's troops which moved through the area and destroyed their encampment in one of the most brutal attacks on a village. The Black Kettle National Grasslands and Washita Battlefield National Historic Site now stands in the footprint of where this horrific event took place telling the story of the days events and allowing us in present day to learn the full impact of what happened. Come with me today to explore the site, walk a short trail and learn more about this event.
