(CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif.) A lead custodian at John Baldwin Elementary in Danville was named the California Department of Education 2021 Classified School Employee of the Year.
Dan Luu was honored on Tuesday for his dedication to his school throughout the pandemic. As noted in the state's Department of Education statement, standard custodial duties changed dramatically in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the school remaining closed during the early part of the year, Luu remained diligent in his work. He cleaned storage rooms to make room for additional bulk items that had to be moved. He helped develop a new schedule to adjust to the multiple a.m. and p.m. waves of students. Luu has been with the Contra Costa County Department of Education for 15 years.
He was not the only East Bay employee to be recognized by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. Natalie Hung, a Clerical and Administrative Secretary, who has worked at Castro Valley Elementary for eight years was also recognized for her continued dedication.
The statement commends her critical role in switching to remote learning both helping prepare teachers and facilitating learning for students and parents. She helped organize and distribute hundreds of Chromebooks and Wi-Fi devices to families. Additionally, she helped troubleshoot connectivity issues for teachers and technology issues for students.
Congratulations to Dan Luu and Natalie Hung!
