Some of Abilene's most iconic restaurants have closed their doors in recent years, but their former locations are not staying vacant for long.

One of the most notable changes is the transformation of the former Abilene Seafood Tavern into a new Mexican restaurant called El Patio.

The seafood tavern, which had been in operation since 1973, closed in December 2022 after the owner decided to retire. El Patio, which opened in June 2023, offers authentic Mexican cuisine, including tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and fajitas.

The owner, Jose Hernandez, said he wanted to bring a taste of his hometown of Monterrey, Mexico, to Abilene.

“I love this city and I saw an opportunity to open a restaurant here,” Hernandez said. “I wanted to offer something different and delicious to the people of Abilene.”

Hernandez said he renovated the interior of the building, adding new tables, chairs, and decorations. He also installed a large patio area outside, where customers can enjoy live music and karaoke on weekends.

What do you think of the new El Patio?
