Staples, one of the largest office supply chains in the nation, is planning to close its store in New Springville, Staten Island, on April 14.
The store is located at 1885 Victory Boulevard and has been serving customers since 1997.
Staples, 2023
The closure is part of a broader trend of Staples shutting down stores across the US and Canada in response to competition from online retailers and changing consumer preferences. According to DiscontinuedNews.com, Staples announced the closure of nearly 140 US locations in 2020 and has shifted its focus to business-to-business transactions rather than brick-and-mortar operations.
Signs on the Staten Island Staples have informed shoppers of the upcoming closure and offered discounts on remaining inventory. “Store Closing—30 percent off your in-store purchase,” they state. “Get these deals before they’re gone.”
Staples is not the only retailer facing challenges in 2023. Business Insider reported that more than 800 stores are expected to close across the US this year, including Amazon, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy’s, and Big Lots.
The COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, inflation, and changing consumer habits have all contributed to the retail slump.
Customers who wish to shop at Staples after April 14 will have to visit other locations in Brooklyn or New Jersey or order online at staples.com.
The company operates almost 200 retail locations in Europe and several office goods mail-order companies internationally.
