A woman lost her life in a crash that damaged a south Louisville business early Thursday morning, police said.

The crash occurred around 3:25 a.m. near the intersection of Outer Loop and 3rd Street Road.

According to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, the woman was driving westbound on Outer Loop when she failed to negotiate a left turn onto 3rd Street Road and crashed into a business in the 8000 blocks. The collision caused both the car and the building to catch fire.

The woman was transported to UofL Hospital with serious injuries, but she did not survive. Her identity has not been released yet pending notification of her family. Mitchell said no one else was inside the car or the business at the time of the crash.

The business that was hit by the car is called A-1 Auto Parts & Sales, according to its sign. It sells used auto parts and vehicles. The owner of the business told WLKY that he was devastated by what happened and that he had been operating there for more than 20 years. He said he did not know the woman who crashed into his building.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by LMPD’s Traffic Unit. Mitchell said it is unclear if speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash. He also said it is unknown why the woman was driving on Outer Loop at that hour.

Mitchell said anyone with information about this case is asked to call LMPD’s anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD (5673). He also urged drivers to be careful on the roads and to avoid distractions while driving.
