It was the second-largest retailer of its kind in the United States until it was acquired by Dollar Tree in 2015. Its headquarters operations were moved from Matthews, a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, to Chesapeake, Virginia, which is located in South Hampton Roads.

According to the January 30 article "Double your dollar? The Wilmington area could see its first 2-in-1 dollar store", officials from Pender County have just gone through a proposal for the development of a Family Dollar and Dollar Tree combo store in Currie, which would be located at the intersection of Montague Road and U.S. Route 421.
"For background, the new Family Dollar/Dollar Tree Combo Store concept is the driving force in support of Dollar Tree, Inc.'s commitment to serving the smaller and more rural population areas, like the Currie community, whose shoppers often travel long distances to meet all their shopping needs," Anchor Sign officials said.
