According to Wikipedia, Family Dollar Stores, Inc. is a chain of discount stores based in the United States. It was the second-largest retailer of its kind in the United States until it was acquired by Dollar Tree in 2015.

At the time of the acquisition, it had over 8,000 locations in all states except Alaska and Hawaii. Its headquarters operations were moved from Matthews, a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina, to Chesapeake, Virginia, which is located in South Hampton Roads.

Last month I've published a couple of articles about dollar stores like Family Dollar or Dollar General, the latter one not so positively: "Dollar General is Overcharging Customers, Franklin County Auditor Says".

Family Dollar/Dollar Tree

According to the November 18 article "New Dollar Tree/Family Dollar store to open", a new Dollar Tree/Family Dollar store is scheduled to open in Cherokee in the near future. It will be situated in the old Shopko building on North Second Street, which is located southeast of the intersection of Highways 59 and 3.

In the article: although there has been no official announcement or communication from the Dollar Tree/Family Dollar company despite repeated efforts by the Chronicle Times the past several weeks, signs posted at the site and connecting the dots among online references and information verifies that a combination Dollar Tree and Family Dollar will be opening in the vacant building.

Local investors sold the 39,000-square-foot building located at 1610 N. 2nd St. to a big national retailer during the summer of this past year; however, the Chronicle Times was unable to confirm that the buyer was Dollar Tree, which is the parent company of Family Dollar.
