An attack on Russia’s southwestern region of Belgorod, which borders northeastern Ukraine has been claimed by a group of anti-Putin Russian nationals on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. This militia is aligned with the Ukrainian army. Drone attacks, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, attacked two areas of Belgorod according to regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov, causing two houses to catch fire. Local authorities reported that about 100 civilians were evacuated from the Russian border settlements of Glotovo and Kozinka in Belgorod.
This surprise attack and apparently taking over the Belgorod border post of Ukraine and Russia has given the world a glimpse of the specific in fighting of Russian nationals actively taking up arms against the Kremlin.
Specific acknowledgment has come directly from The Freedom for Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps by telegram stating they “continue to liberate the Belgorod region!” The telegram reported that the groups involved in this attack on Russia were “patriot volunteers” and claimed that Russia was vulnerable to attack as “Russia has no reserves to respond to military crises. All military personnel are dead, wounded, or in Ukraine.”
Notably, Russian officials condemned the attack immediately. A clear embarrassment to President Vladimir Putin in specific reference to how this attack was able to take place inside Russia and how best may be the right way to respond. To clarify, Putin has had limited gains in 15 months on the battlefield in an invasion that he initially claimed was a necessity to keep Russia safe.
