On Friday, May 19, 2023, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Affairs made an announcement that it was banning “500 Americans,” from entering their country “in a response to the regularly anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Joe Biden administration”. This new edict includes many prominent figures holding United States executive power.
The list of those banned in Russia consists of 500 plus Americans. It includes Former United States President Barack Obama, CNN’s Erin Burnett, former US Ambassador Jon Huntsman, several US senators, CNN’s Chief International Security Correspondent Nick Paton Walsh, Senior Global Affairs Analyst Bianna Golodryga, CNN contributor Timothy Naftali. and the next expected chairman of the joint chiefs Charles Q. Brown Jr. Interestingly enough, television hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers are also listed in this Russian announcement. To clarify- the list was labeled, “500 Americans,” however Paton Walsh is a British citizen.
The statement from Moscow included, “The attached ‘list-500’ also includes those in government and law enforcement agencies who are directly involved in the persecution of dissidents in the wake of the so-called Storming the Capitol.” Reuters had reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have questioned the arrest of the rioters stating the people had come to Congress “with political demands”.
The ministry justified the bans by posting on its website “It is high time for Washington to learn that not a single hostile attack against Russia will go without a strong reaction.”
Specific explanations on this ban or any of the individuals included were not made to the public.
