On Monday, May 8, 2023, a home in New Jersey’s Mercer County was struck with what might be a meteorite through the roof of the house. The residents, all unhurt, were both shocked and dismayed at the incident.
The ranch-style home had a 4-inch by 6-inch rock-like formation blast through the roof on Old Washington Crossing at Pennington Road. It damaged both the roof and the hardwood floor of the residence. The Hopewell Township Police Department is investigating the incident and sending the object forward to other agencies for further detailed review.
A local resident, Suzy Kop, reported to CBS News “It appears whatever came from the sky fell through the roof of the top window, that’s my dad’s bedroom”. Initially, she thought someone had thrown a rock at the house until she got a closer look at the oblong object, which was “warm” to the touch. “We are thinking it’s a meteorite, came through here, hit the floor here because that’s completely damaged, it ricocheted up to this part of the ceiling and then finally rested on the floor there,” she reported. As mentioned previously, no one was physically hurt by the object although emergency responders scanned all the family members for possible radioactivity.
New Jersey Advanced Media reported that the Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower, occurring annually between April 19 and May 28-may be the culprit. The Eta Aquariids meteor shower occurs each year when the Earth Earth passes through debris from Halley’s Comet.
