As day 440 dawns of the Russian- Ukrainian war, Russia is focused on its Victory Day parade, an annual event marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany. This event is used in Moscow to flaunt military missiles, launchers, battle tanks, and equipment. Russian troops march through Red Square while the general public and Russian President Vladimir Putin and military generals bask in what they believe is their glory. Even with security heightened due to the recent assassination attempt on Vladimir Putin, the Victory Day Parade is meeting its scheduled date.

Kyiv had an expected counteroffensive planned this week which was met by increased military aggression from the Russian forces. Kyiv, Odesa, and Kherson were bombarded with missiles over the last few days. Kyiv was targeted with more strikes overnight.

Recent updates include the death of at least four people as reported by Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. He said Russia fired 60 Iranian-made kamikaze drones, including 36 at Kyiv, all of which were shot down. Debris, however, hit apartments and other buildings. In addition to Kyiv, the southern city of Kherson and at least seven others in that area were targeted. At least 20 towns and villages have come under shelling in the central Zaporizhzhia region in recent days.

In the area of Zaporizhzhia, the Moscow-appointed governor of the region, Yevgeny Balitsky, said about 3,000 civilians have been evacuated close to a nuclear power plant. Apparently, operations at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest, have been suspended. This was reported by the Russian state news agency TASS.
An important development in the news of mercenaries, The Wagner Group leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, reported that the group was starting to receive needed ammunition to their advantage in order to capture Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

In order to increase its military, it has been reported by the Mariupol City Council that Russia is mobilizing residents in the occupied southeastern city to serve in its army. Also, the United Kingdom’s defense ministry reported that Russia has begun targeting Central Asians to serve in the war in Ukraine which began on February 24, 2022.
With no end in sight, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to ravage the land, the environment, people, and their freedoms as the world stage awaits daily developments.
