The European Union ( EU) which was created in 1957 presently has a unique partnership with 27 countries, all democratic. This union embodies respect for human dignity, freedom, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights including minority groups. Their motto is “Unified Diversity”. Although each country has its own culture, language, and traditions, they share common values and comply with all members of the EU.
These EU countries or Member States cover much of the European continent. It reflects home to over 447 million people ( roughly 6% of the world's population). These countries joined to build a “better future” for all.
The European Union includes Poland which will now call upon its members to sanction Russian agricultural products entering the bloc. As reported by The Polish Press Agency, “We believe that sanctions on Russian agricultural products should be imposed immediately,” said Andrzej Sadoś, the Polish permanent representative to the European Union.
Andrzej Sadoś, the Polish representative, call for sanctions occurred after Warsaw broke with Kyiv to call for limits on Ukrainian grain comings into Poland and the other European Union countries. To clarify, The European Commission in April of 2023 made an agreement in principle with Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia. This initial agreement would permit the transit of Ukrainian grain across their countries without any of it entering their domestic markets. Almost immediately this transitory situation fell apart.
Since February 2022, the European Union has imposed 10 rounds of sanctions against Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine. Farm products, however, have not been addressed due to the threat to food security particularly in Africa. This week May 7th-13th 2023 European diplomats are scheduled to discuss the 11th round of sanctions against Russia.
