The full moon of May 2022 occurs on the 15th and 16th of this month. During a lunar eclipse, the color of the moon changes from white or yellow to a rusty orange hue. This has given it the nickname “Blood Moon”. May 15, 2022, will be the next total eclipse. This late Sunday evening event will last into the early morning Monday hours of May 16th.

In the eastern United States–New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut the subtle changes will begin at approximately 9:30 pm Sunday night. This may be the top astronomy event of 2022 if the clouds above are not cloudy.

This eerie shift in transformation is not due to the alignment of the elements, but of light reflection on the lunar surface. During a total lunar eclipse, no direct light gets to the moon’s surface. The earth’s atmosphere filters the only light available. The sunrises and sunsets of the earth will all be projected onto the moon’s surface at one time. The orange hue will be visible for approximately one hour and 24 minutes.

"The more dust or clouds in Earth's atmosphere during the eclipse, the redder the Moon will appear," NASA added. This dust could come from a variety of sources, such as wildfires or volcanic eruptions.

What happens actually occurs in five events. The first is when the full moon enters the Earth’s outer shadow—its penumbra (a penumbral lunar eclipse). The second, it begins to enter Earth’s inner shadow—its umbra. The third, it begins to turn red (a partial lunar eclipse). The fourth, the whole of the Moon enters inside the umbra that’s totality and the Moon will have turned 100% red.

The fifth event unfolds within 84 minutes or so and the effects go into reverse. The Moon exits the umbra, then the penumbra.

The “Blood Moon” has evoked curiosity and speculation throughout the ages.

The Native American tribes believed that the moon needed care at the time of this event. Islamic cultures thought it to be a time of fervent prayer. Incan and Mesopotamian cultures thought it to be an omen of death and destruction of the king. Toward more current times, in 2013 prophecies in the Bible began to be interpreted by Christian Preachers giving rise to beliefs of ominous activity.

In terms of astrology, the time of the red moon symbolizes financial growth, emotional stability, personality development, and a plethora of other elements. Whatever beliefs may unfold for the discerning individual, the time of May 15, 2002-May 16, 2022 is a time of wonderment and expression of the natural elements in our universe.
