Located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region of the United States, New Jersey was initially inhabited by Native Americans for almost 3,000 years. The Lenape, later taking the name Delaware Tribes, were the dominant group when Europeans arrived in the early 17th century. The name itself means “original people and the language of their time was Algonquian. The Delaware Indians lived in various parts of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and Delaware when the explores first began to settle in the area. Currently, we refer to these tribes as natives rather than Indians as they were respectfully the first Native Americans of the area.

The early Delaware people did not even imagine that land itself could be bought and sold. Their belief system was that it belonged to the creator. As the Europeans began to “settle” and come from their long journey, these natives shared all they had. Without the knowledge they were selling the land in trade- for small token gifts- Europeans took the stronghold of property.

New Jersey has over 130 miles of beaches, over 715,000 acres of farmland, and 2 million acres of forest. There are 591 towns and cities in this Garden State. The term Garden State came from the vast agricultural nature of the land and its bountiful production.

In 2022, New Jersey can boast of not only having diversely populated areas but a variety of entertainment options as well. Famous celebrities include Meryl Streep, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Douglas, Dennis Rodman, Joe Pesci, and Jon Bon Jovi to name a few. Entertainment includes major league hockey, soccer, and football- each at home in this state.

A study completed in 2020 named New Jersey as one of the four most culturally diverse states in the country. Immigrants flooded the area from New York City through Ellis Island. New Jersey became a mecca and a “melting pot” for people of all ethnic backgrounds looking for a bright future.

New Jersey has much to offer in terms of location, cultural diversity, and family entertainment. Yes, we still are still one of only two states that do not permit you to pump your own gas. However, interesting debates linger about whether to call a sandwich “Pork Roll” or “Taylor Ham”. More importantly, there is never any debate about what state has the greatest tomato. “The Jersey Tomato”
