A tragedy unfolded in Florida on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 after a woman was fatally shot by her young child at the Oaks of Spring Valley apartments in Altamonte Springs. The shooting was accidental and occurred after Shamaya Lynn's toddler found an armed, unsecured gun that belonged to the child's father.
According to WESH, 21-year-old Shamaya was shot in the back of the head, which was witnessed by coworkers on a live work call on Zoom. Witnesses say coworkers saw Shamaya's child, heard a noise, and saw her fall over in her chair. 9-1-1 was dialed after she never returned to the zoom call. Paramedics made life-saving efforts, but it was too late. The mother's other child was in the home as well at the time of the incident.
Police say the death, “was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment.”
Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. stated to WESH,
"To anyone and everyone tuning into this story, if you have a firearm, please keep it locked and secured. This incident could be avoided."
Altamonte Springs Police Department is providing free gun locks following this, and a series of other tragedies across the nation involving children accessing loaded firearms.
Friends, family, and strangers alike have paid their respects and sent prayers to Shamaya and her family on her social media accounts.
It is uncertain at this time if any charges will be filed against the gun owner.
