(Denver, CO) The debate over whether pineapple has a place on a pizza is hotter than a wood-fired oven. But peach on a pizza? It’s a Colorado tradition this time of year when juicy Palisade stone fruits are ripe for experimentation.
That’s right. Detroit has its square pizzas with thick, chewy crusts. New York has hand-tossed thin crusts. And Chicago has deep dish pies.
But Colorado-style pizzas are on the menu in August, topped with peaches. (Beau Jo’s thick-crust pizza drizzled with honey is a runner-up for Colorado-style pizza).
Here are three spots in the Denver metro where you can get a peach pizza.
Located in Denver Central Market in the RiNo neighborhood, Vero Italian is the sister restaurant to Chef Andrea Frizzi’s Il Posto. The wood-fired oven is baking a Palisade Peach Pizza with mozzarella, goat cheese, cream, prosciutto, peaches, and a drizzle of honey. 2669 Larimer St., Denver
Both the LoHi and RiNo location of Cart-Driver, an oyster and pizza spot, put their own spins on peach pizzas. The Peachza at Cart-Driver RiNo comes with Palisade peaches, horseradish honey, brie Calabrian chili, basil and red onions.
Over at Cart-Driver LoHi, the peach pizza is served with Colorado peaches, heirloom tomatoes, tarragon, fresh Asiago, house-made pancetta and a Calabrian hot honey.
RiNo location: 2500 Larimer St., #100, Denver
LoHi location: 2239 W. 30th Ave, Denver
Lakewood pizza joint Pizzeria Leopold’s newest seasonal pie is called “We got 99 problems but a PEACH ain’t one!” (Jay-Z fans will get the reference). The Peaches come from Morton’s Organic Orchards and the candied beef bacon is sourced from RIver Bear American Meats in Denver, making for an ultra-local pie.
The pizza is also topped with a housemade garlic sauce and gets a generous amount of cheese with Provolone Piccante, fresh mozzarella, pecorino, and Gorgonzola. It’s finished with a peach, cherry relish, and basil from Altius Farms. 1990 Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood
