(Denver, CO) Next up on the food holiday calendar is National Oyster Day, which falls on Aug. 5.

Don’t let the whole “we live in a landlocked state” prevent you from a proper celebration. There are a few fantastic seafood restaurants in the Denver metro ship in the bivalves fresh so you can enjoy these coastal delicacies and have mountain views, too.

Here are my favorite spots in the Mile High City to savor oysters this weekend (or, shucks! any day).

Pizza and oysters? Both are competing for star status on the menus at Cart-Driver, where you can order up a daily selection of oysters and dress ‘em in mignonette and give them a lemon bath. Stay on theme with seafood by ordering the littleneck clam pizza.

From birthdays to anniversaries, Water Grill is my go-to celebration spot. And the almighty oyster deserves celebrating, too. You’d be hard-pressed to find more oyster varieties anywhere in Colorado; Water Grill has 16 varieties at a time and gets fresh ones in about every other day. To splurge, go for the Honeymoon Oyster, a $14 fresh-shucked beauty piled with three different types of roe and a quail egg. 1691 Market St, Denver, CO 80202

Blue Island Oyster Bar & Seafood

Another great spot for seafood is Blue Island, where you can order them from the raw bar or have a roasted plate with garlic herb butter, Parmesan and Ritz crumbs.

Blue Island is throwing a party for its beloved bivalve on Saturday at the Cherry Creek and Lone Tree location, with $1.99 oysters all day, plus spritzes and live music. Reservations are recommended.

While I know it’s the oyster’s special day, the clam chowder with bits of apple-smoked bacon at Blue Island is also bidding for your attention.

And, if you’re celebrating oyster day at home, Blue Island has a video on how to shuck oysters with an oyster knife and towel (a must for safety!)

Jovanina’s Broken Italian

Date night? Ascend the candle-lit stairs to a sexy catacomb-like dining room in Jovanina’s Broken Italian. (Here’s where we remind you oysters are aphrodisiacs!) Chilled raw oysters are served with a pomegranate mignonette. The wood oven-roasted ones are baked with a prosciutto herb butter. 1520 Blake St., Denver, CO
