(Denver, CO) Providing a luxury stay for travelers passing through Union Station, The Oxford Hotel opened in 1891 with marbled floors and frescoed walls. Officially, the Oxford is Denver’s oldest hotel, and it’s earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
Unofficially, it’s also known for at least two hotel guests never really checked out.
Now, the hotel is offering a “Haunted History” package that includes a guided LoDo ghost tour and a spine-tingling, if-you-dare stay in Room 320.
According to hotel lore, Room 320 is the most haunted in the hotel. In 1898, a woman named Florence Montague shot and killed her unfaithful husband in the room before taking her own life.
Since then, single male guests who stay in the room have reported strange events like the sheets being pulled off the bed, and the lights and bathroom faucets being turned on and off.
The hotel also says that guests in The Cruise Room — the first bar to open in Denver on the day Prohibition ended — report seeing a man in a historic postman uniform.
He purportedly comes in, sits at the bar and orders a beer muttering: “the children, I have to get the gifts to the children.”
Hotel historians say that in the 1930s, a mailman was en route to deliver Christmas gifts to children in Central City but got stuck in a snowstorm and never finished his deliveries
Would you pay to have a chance for a ghost scare?
The Oxford Hotel Haunted History package starts and $594 per night and includes:
- Overnight accommodations in The Oxford’s Room 320
- A guided LoDo Ghost Tour for two people
- Two cocktails at The Cruise Room
The hotel donates $50 to The Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation for each Oxford Haunted History stay as a goodwill gesture on behalf of the never delivered Central City gifts.
Also, if you prefer booze with your boos, know this: The Oxford celebrated its 130th anniversary last fall by partnering with Laws Whiskey House to create a custom 130th Anniversary Label Four Grain Bourbon, which is poured nightly at the Bourbon Hour.
Accommodations in Room 320 and LoDo Ghost Tours are based on availability at the time of booking. Tours are offered daily at 6:30 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. The package is available until Oct. 31, 2022.
