Following a series of violent earthquakes in the Pacific, a tsunami threat was considered by NOAA for California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, and the West Coast of Canada. Waves weakened as they traveled toward California. Within a few hours following the earthquakes, all concerns of a tsunami were calmed.

Since California is amongst the most significant points of impact if a tsunami were triggered by a seismic event in the Pacific, California’s earthquake and tsunami response systems have been some of the first to assess the risk.

The earthquakes mentioned below have been documented by USGS, CalTech, EarthquakeTrack, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, and Alaska Earthquake Observatory – all credible and globally recognized seismic activity monitoring systems. UTC is an abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time.

Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Struck the Pagan Region, Northern Mariana Islands: On 7 November 2023 at 6:15 PM UTC, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck the Pagan Region at a depth of 623.2 km.
