Following a violent magnitude 6.6 earthquake in the Pacific, a tsunami threat was issued to California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii along the west coast of the United States and Canada. Waves surged north, up the coast to California. Fortunately, the waves weakened as they traveled along the coastline. Within a few hours following the initial earthquake, all threats of a tsunami were retracted.

Since California is amongst the most significant points of impact if a tsunami were triggered by a seismic event in the Pacific, California’s earthquake and tsunami response systems have been some of the first to assess the risk.

The earthquake mentioned here today has been documented by USGS, CalTech, EarthquakeTrack, Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, and Alaska Earthquake Observatory – all credible and globally recognized seismic activity monitoring systems. UTC is an abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time.

Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Struck 81 km West Southwest of Vallenar, Chile: On 31 October 2023 at 12:33 PM UTC, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Chile at a depth of 35 km.
