Tsunami alert systems in California and the United States west coast have detected a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that struck the Rat Islands of Alaska. Recent seismic activity along Alaskaโ€™s fault lines has pushed seismologists and geologists to agree upon a larger seismic event occurring. White an officialย tsunami warningย has yet to be issued, the west coast remains vigilant.

Seismic activity in these areas is normal, and thereโ€™s no need to panic. After a spike in volcanic activity, seismic activity, and ice quakes in the region over the last month, the idea of aย tsunamiย has been explored more now than ever.

The region is known for its seismicity, and the reach of a tsunami from this area would be rather extensive. Alaskaโ€™s fault lines branch down southward, along the west coast of Canada, and into the west coast of the United States. Geologists are considering the likelihood of a tsunami from Alaska reaching Washington, Oregon, and California.

Since the Great Sitkinโ€™s volcano in Alaska erupted, an official โ€˜Orange Watchโ€™ has been issued for Great Sitkin by USGS, which indicates an active eruption.

โ€œSlow eruption of lava is continuing at Great Sitkin Volcano, producing a thick lava flow within the summit crater. Steaming at the crater was observed in high-resolution satellite images from the past day,โ€ according to USGS.

Alaskaโ€™s Great Sitkin Volcano has been under โ€˜Orange Watch,โ€™ which is an indication that an eruption is underway. Furthermore, a handful of other Alaskan volcanoes are also under the watchful eye of local seismologists.

Alaskaโ€™s most recent seismic activityย can be found at theย Alaska Earthquake Center. The following earthquakes have been documented byย USGSย and AEC, two of the most credible and globally-recognized seismic activity monitoring systems used in the region. UTC is an abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time.

Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Struck the Rat Islands, in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska: On 8 June 2023 at 8:31 PM UTC, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the Rat Islands, in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, at a depth of 7.1 km.

Residents In New Jersey Urged To Stay Indoors During Spraying Of Toxic Chemicals

Residents in Central New Jersey are being asked to stay indoors on Thursday, 7 September (today,) and Monday, 11 September, due to the release of toxic chemicals in an attempt to mitigate a mosquito crisis in the region. The Mosquito Extermination Commission of Middlesex County announced the use of the chemicals Prallethrin (Sumithrin), Deltamethrin (DeltaGard), Malathion (Fyfanon), and Etofenprox (Zenivex) in the communities of Old Bridge, Monroe, East Brunswick, Helmetta, and Spotswood. The Mosquito Extermination Commission says, โ€œPlan your activities to limit time spent outside during times of possible insecticide treatments. Move your pets, their food, and water dishes inside during application. Also, bring clothing and childrenโ€™s toys inside. Whenever possible, remain indoors with windows closed and with window air conditioners on non-vent (closed to the outside air) and window fans turned off during spraying. Avoid direct contact with surfaces that are still wet from pesticide spraying. Do not allow children to play in areas that have been sprayed until they have completely dried (approximately one hour.)โ€ Weather permitting, the spraying will be performed between 6:30 PM and midnight. If it rains on 11 September, the county has scheduled the procedure for the following day. The Mosquito Extermination Commission further outlines, โ€œIf you must remain outdoors, avoid eye and skin contact with the spray. If you get spray in your eyes or on your skin, immediately flush and rinse with water. Consult your doctor if you think you are experiencing health effects from the spraying. People who suffer from chemical sensitivities or feel spraying may aggravate a preexisting health condition may consult their physician or local health department.โ€ More information regarding plans to spray for mosquitos can be found here: https://www.middlesexcountynj.gov/government/departments/department-of-public-safety-and-health/middlesex-county-mosquito-commission/public-notice-for-adult-mosquito-control-treatment-spray-notice.
