Following the powerful seismicity in the Pacific along the edge of the Pacific Plate, otherwise known as the Ring of Fire, Oregon State has experienced shallow seismic events that are pointing to something of larger seismic proportions occurring.

While there is no fool-proof method of predicting seismic activity, California, Oregon, and Washington have a newΒ β€˜MyShake’ app that acts as anΒ early earthquake detection systemΒ along the San Andreas. MyShake employs the same technology that notifies people of potentially dangerous seismic activity around the world.

Oregon is home toΒ sixty-oneΒ volcanoes,Β fiveΒ of which are highly active. Within the last week in the Cascade Range, Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, and Mount St. Helens have displayed seismic activity. This seismically active region is the northernmost point of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.Β

TheΒ Cascadia Subduction ZoneΒ is known for producing some of the largest and most powerful earthquakes in the world, and seismologists expect the infamousΒ CascadiaΒ seismic event to strike in this region. Cascadia has been predicted to be a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and trigger a tsunami that could reach hundreds of miles. Historically, there have been 200-600 years between events of this magnitude in the past. The last Cascadia event occurred onΒ 26 January 1700.

The earthquakes documented below have taken place in a region accustomed to seismic activity, and while their seismicity is being evaluated, there's no need to panic. The reported earthquakes have been documented byΒ USGSΒ andΒ Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, two of the most credible and globally-recognized seismic activity monitoring systems. UTC is an abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time.

Magnitude 3.0 Earthquake Struck 8 km North Northeast of Government Camp, Oregon: On 6 June 2023 at 9:35 PM UTC, a magnitude 3.0m earthquake struck Government Camp, Oregon, at a depth of 1.4 km.

Magnitude 2.6 Earthquake Struck Mount Hood, Oregon: On 6 June 2023 at 9:36 PM UTC, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck Mount Hood, Oregon, at a depth of 3.1 km.

Residents In New Jersey Urged To Stay Indoors During Spraying Of Toxic Chemicals

Residents in Central New Jersey are being asked to stay indoors on Thursday, 7 September (today,) and Monday, 11 September, due to the release of toxic chemicals in an attempt to mitigate a mosquito crisis in the region. The Mosquito Extermination Commission of Middlesex County announced the use of the chemicals Prallethrin (Sumithrin), Deltamethrin (DeltaGard), Malathion (Fyfanon), and Etofenprox (Zenivex) in the communities of Old Bridge, Monroe, East Brunswick, Helmetta, and Spotswood. The Mosquito Extermination Commission says, β€œPlan your activities to limit time spent outside during times of possible insecticide treatments. Move your pets, their food, and water dishes inside during application. Also, bring clothing and children’s toys inside. Whenever possible, remain indoors with windows closed and with window air conditioners on non-vent (closed to the outside air) and window fans turned off during spraying. Avoid direct contact with surfaces that are still wet from pesticide spraying. Do not allow children to play in areas that have been sprayed until they have completely dried (approximately one hour.)” Weather permitting, the spraying will be performed between 6:30 PM and midnight. If it rains on 11 September, the county has scheduled the procedure for the following day. The Mosquito Extermination Commission further outlines, β€œIf you must remain outdoors, avoid eye and skin contact with the spray. If you get spray in your eyes or on your skin, immediately flush and rinse with water. Consult your doctor if you think you are experiencing health effects from the spraying. People who suffer from chemical sensitivities or feel spraying may aggravate a preexisting health condition may consult their physician or local health department.” More information regarding plans to spray for mosquitos can be found here: https://www.middlesexcountynj.gov/government/departments/department-of-public-safety-and-health/middlesex-county-mosquito-commission/public-notice-for-adult-mosquito-control-treatment-spray-notice.
