Following the powerful seismicity in the Pacific along the edge of the Pacific Plate, otherwise known as the Ring of Fire, Oregon State has experienced shallow seismic events that are pointing to something of larger seismic proportions occurring.
While there is no fool-proof method of predicting seismic activity, California, Oregon, and Washington have a newΒ βMyShakeβΒ app that acts as anΒ early earthquake detection systemΒ along the San Andreas. MyShake employs the same technology that notifies people of potentially dangerous seismic activity around the world.
Oregon is home toΒ sixty-oneΒ volcanoes,Β fiveΒ of which are highly active. Within the last week in the Cascade Range, Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, and Mount St. Helens have displayed seismic activity. This seismically active region is the northernmost point of the Cascadia Subduction Zone.Β
TheΒ Cascadia Subduction ZoneΒ is known for producing some of the largest and most powerful earthquakes in the world, and seismologists expect the infamousΒ CascadiaΒ seismic event to strike in this region. Cascadia has been predicted to be a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and trigger a tsunami that could reach hundreds of miles. Historically, there have been 200-600 years between events of this magnitude in the past. The last Cascadia event occurred onΒ 26 January 1700.
The earthquakes documented below have taken place in a region accustomed to seismic activity, and while their seismicity is being evaluated, there's no need to panic. The reported earthquakes have been documented byΒ USGSΒ andΒ Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, two of the most credible and globally-recognized seismic activity monitoring systems. UTC is an abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time.
Magnitude 3.0 Earthquake Struck 8 km North Northeast of Government Camp, Oregon: On 6 June 2023 at 9:35 PM UTC, a magnitude 3.0m earthquake struck Government Camp, Oregon, at a depth of 1.4 km.
Magnitude 2.6 Earthquake Struck Mount Hood, Oregon: On 6 June 2023 at 9:36 PM UTC, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck Mount Hood, Oregon, at a depth of 3.1 km.
