Avril Lavigne is officially engaged to boyfriend Mod Sun, legally Derek Ryan Smith. They have reportedly dated for over a year since rumors of the couple began to bubble in February of 2021, according to Nylon Magazine.
The announcement was made on Thursday from Avril’s Instagram account where she posted pictures of the [heart-shaped] ring, the man [Mod Sun,] and the proposal (at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France!) The post is captioned with the date 27 March 2022 and it’s sweet that the couple was able to keep such big news under their hats for two weeks. In celebrity time that’s a long time for a secret to be kept hidden, especially considering they showed up to the Grammys together where she was not wearing the ring; this was super hush-hush!
Avril was the only featured artist on Mod Sun’s most recent album in the song “Flames,” they also released the hit “Bite Me” together. On the collaboration, Mod Sun told Us Weekly, “All of a sudden she comes through and I understood the song better after she sang it. I understood why this is a great song. Sometimes as an artist, you don’t really know,” Mod Sun explained. “It’s really hard to be, like, ‘This is the song that’s gonna make it, or this is the song that’s gonna blow up,’ You might think in your head that you have the idea of what’s gonna work every time, but most of the time you have no idea what you’re making when you’re making it.”
Avril Lavigne, a Canadian native, has had a bumpy relationship history. She was married to Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley from 2006 to 2010, then Nickleback’s Chad Kroger from 2013 to 2015. In December of 2021, Avril told Nylon, “Honestly, I really believed in love. And then I went through the wringer with it,” the singer reflected on her past relationships. “Then I finally got back up on my feet,” she continues to tell the magazine, “I can’t believe that I’ve been hurt or mistreated by this many people. I need a break from relationships.”
After everything she’d gone through, relationships were the last thing on the “Sk8er Boi” singer’s mind. “I feel like I’ve had the wind knocked out of me over and over.” She elaborates on how she got herself through the breakups, “I need to take care of me right now. So I bought a house, and I wasn’t waiting for a guy to start a future with.” She had to constantly remind herself “I’m doing this for me now. I’m the only person, I’m the only one I can rely on,” she put more effort into ignoring her feelings for Mod Sun than acting on them. “I tried to resist it, hard,” she said, “the most I’ve ever tried to.”
Now they're engaged!
