"And that's on family trauma and racism," she captioned the TikTok video.
Every day we're reminded that racism is still alive and well. Despite Black Lives Matter campaigns, new laws, and police officers finally being charged for crimes committed against blacks, nothing has changed.
This was recently highlighted when a woman went viral on TikTok after she shared that her father committed suicide because she married a black man.
In the TikTok video that's since been removed, Megan McElrath shared that her father committed suicide four days after she married her black husband and that half of her family no longer talks to her because they blame her.
The video had reached over one million views before TikTok removed it. Apparently, TikTok frowns upon users sharing videos about death by suicide. However, many TikTokers have since reposted the video.
Users reacted differently to the news of her father's tragic death in the original video. One user commented, "Please don’t let urself believe that’s the reason. He was severely mentally I’ll if he did that. Don’t take on that blame. Hugs and hope to u."
Another user wrote, "the fact that the racism was so deep to his core he didn’t know what to do with himself when he was supposed to accept a new son into his family. I am so sorry. Not your fault."
Someone else said, "I say a win is a win. Heal yourself from the loss but you do not want ppl who judge you that way in your life. Congrats on your wedding and blessings!"
Megan's TikTok account, @MeganMcElrath, can no longer be found. It is unclear whether she deleted her account or if TikTok disabled it due to her going against their terms of use.
