Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population but are most responsible for attacks on their owners and other humans. In 2016, of the 31 Americans killed by dogs, 23 were killed by pit bulls and their mixes.
These facts were highlighted recently after a Tennessee family's two pit bulls viciously attacked the owner and her two children. Hollace Dean Bennard and Lilly Jane Bennard, five months and two years old have both died from the injuries sustained from the attack. The two were their parent's only children.
The children’s 30-year-old mom, Kirstie Jane Bennard, is currently in critical condition, as she suffered injuries after trying to save her babies. According to police, her husband, Colby Bennard, was reportedly left unharmed. It has yet to be said if he was home during the attack.
It’s unclear what triggered the dogs, and they have been taken away by the local animal control department. Although, it hasn't been said if the animals have been put down.
According to reports, the investigation into the attack is ongoing.
Colby Bennard's uncle, Jeff Gibson, took to Facebook to give an update on Kirstie's condition and explained that no funeral arrangements have been made for the children as of yet. Take a look at the now-viral post below:
Kelsey Gallini, Kirstie's best friend, also took to Facebook to show her disapproval of the media coverage that this tragedy has been getting. She wrote: “Just to stir the pot on the war on pit bulls? You’re disgusting.”
