Italian cuisine is such a massive part of the culinary universe. It has been the influence and result of hundreds of years of food history and there is plenty of Italian tradition in the Chicago restaurant scene.

From pasta to pizza, Chicago has some of the best Italian food that can be found anywhere in the United States. If you are in the mood for some amazing noodles and looking for a great red sauce look no further than the Windy City. If you are craving some traditional pizza, ditch the deep dish because Chicago is also home to plenty of amazing and authentic Italian run pizzerias. Here is a list below of some of the Italian establishments in Chicago that you can not afford to miss out on.

1. Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio

Monteverde is run by the executive chef Sarah Grueneberg who is the ex-head chef at Spiaggia in which she defended the restaurant's three Michelin stars for a few years and has won many accolades and awards over the years. At Monteverde, Chef Grueneberg has created one of the most loved Italian restaurants as well as made a name for herself in the city of Chicago. For those that have yet to visit, a few must try dishes at Monteverde include the classic cacio e pepe or the ragu alla napoletana. Any pasta dish that you choose to try here will leave you fully satisfied and with a new appreciation for carbs. The restaurant is also slightly more casual than many fine dining establishments around so there is a more relaxed dining experience.

Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio can be found located at 1020 West Madison Street.

2. Spiaggia

Spiaggia is one of the many Michelin starred restaurants along the city's Magnificent Mile and is looked up to as one of the examples of top tier Italian in Chicago. The establishment is very popular for their rich and flavorful white truffle gnocchi and the wonderfully prepared bistecca alla fiorentina which is also dry aged. The regular options at Spiaggia include either a five course or eight course tasting menu which is an absolute experience. For those that are looking for something more casual than the tasting menu the restaurant also has an annex called Cafe Spiaggia where the pasta is just as lovingly curated and served.

Spiaggia can be found located at 980 N Michigan Ave 2nd Floor, Suite 1.

3. La Scarola

La Scarola boasts one of the city's most formidable red sauces and is found in a cozy establishment that has been visited by the likes of many famous figures. As a warning for those visiting for the first time, the portion sizes at La Scarola are doled out in quite healthy sizes so when visiting it is even better if you bring a large group of friends or family to share the dishes with. Some of the best options to pick from La Scarola include penne alla vodka, pasta e fagioli, and their eggplant parm.

La Scarola can be found located at 721 W Grand Ave.

4. RPM Italian

At RPM Italian, the location is almost as good as the food served. The restaurant itself can be found right around River North and has an amazing interior staged with big comfortable booths and energetic music that will instantly give your body energy and make you feel even hungrier for the food. One of their most popular dishes that is the favorite of many local Chicagoans is their cavatelli served in a pork and beef ragu. The pasta is all made in house at RPM Italian and all of their pasta sauces are immaculately balanced and truly bring out the rich and fragrant flavors in each of their dishes.

RPM Italian can be found located at 52 W Illinois St.
