Minnesota is known as the legendary birthplace of the Jucy Lucy. As the name suggests, the Jucy Lucy is an incredibly juicy cheeseburger except unlike most cheeseburgers, the slice of cheese doesn't melt over the patty but instead, inside of it. The creative Midwest concoction was created by the 5-8 Club and Matt's Bar in Minneapolis.
These two bars have been the birthplace of the wild invention that is the Jucy Lucy and while both locations claim to be the inventor, no one really knows who was the first to stuff cheese inside of the meat patty. Despite the mystery surrounding the origin, the Jucy Lucy has since been incorporated as a menu item in a huge number of establishments across the Twin Cities.
In order to create the Jucy Lucy, a burger is assembled by carefully sealing a chunk of cheese right in the middle of two beef patties. Then as the two patties are sealed together it slowly becomes a singular patty with a cheesy heart in the middle.
The creation was a stroke of genius and allows for a perfectly melted cheesy center and has the end goal of not only perfectly gooey cheese but also a wonderfully tender patty that stays juicy from all the cheese. The texture of this type of burger is more similar to a normal burger as there is no layer of cheese between the bun and the beef patty which gives a very similar mouthfeel to the bite as if it were a normal hamburger.
The toppings on a Jucy Lucy vary from establishment but in most places, the condiments are similar to what you might image to be put on a burger anywhere else. Carmelized onions and pickels are popular choices.
