The cinnamon roll is a classic brunch and dessert staple. It is a rich, gooey, and sweet pastry that can be found in almost any bakery or breakfast diner across the country. In Chicago, there's just one place that does it best. That place is Ann Sather.
Ann Sather is a true Chicago staple. It is a restaurant that has such a rich history and is adored by all Chicagoans. The story of Ann Sather starts all the way back into the mid 1940's. This was when Ann Sather wasn't a restaurant but just a single determined woman that chased her dream of owning her own restaurant. She was full of drive and passion so when she got the opportunity in 1945, Ann Sather saved up all her money and quit her job in order to buy the original diner in the Lakeview neighborhood that is now hailed across Chicago as Ann Sather Restaurant.
She took a huge risk and quit her job at the young age of twenty two. In the beginning, it was a tough journey but Ann Sather was able to create a home for many that would visit for her comforting homemade food and amazing hospitality. Ann Sather treated customers beyond what was expected and soon enough, all of her customers become much more than that.
Ann Sather was a force to be reckoned with and was able to lead the diner herself from 1945 all the way to around 1980. At this time, after decades of hard work, she had made an everlasting name for herself and her food around the Chicago area.
As Ann was getting older she realized she needed to find someone to pass down the diner to and would continue to live up to her name and provide the same loving food to her devoted customers. After a while of searching, Ann Sather eventually decided to pass on the restaurant to a young man named Tom Tunney. Tom was a young man that was only twenty four years old at the time. He was an alumni of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the prestigious Cornell University. After being taken under Ann's wing for around a year and learning the ins and outs of the business, Tom had truly gained a masterful understanding of his culinary training and cooking skills.
During the last few decades Tom perfected the legendary Ann Sather cinnamon rolls as well as built two additional diners to add to the Ann Sather name. These cinnamon rolls are lovingly crafted with rolls on rolls of its classic buttery dough and topped with a perfectly sweet vanilla glaze. The best part about these cinnamon rolls are that they are extremely inexpensive and come in a set of two so you can share or just keep them both to yourself.
These cinnamon rolls are best when served right out of the oven and eaten while the frosting is still melting onto the tray. On an average day, each Ann Sather diner serves roughly six thousand cinnamon rolls. Even the staff can't get enough of them and will still eat any extras straight out of the oven after working there everyday.
The recipe for these cinnamon rolls is a closely guarded secret and was passed down to Tom Tunney after he inherited the establishment from Ann.
