Former US President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Saturday to claim that illegal leaks suggested he could face criminal charges in New York about law enforcement had informed him of impending indictment money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Although Trump did not confirm whether law enforcement had informed him of an impending indictment, NBC News reported on Friday that law enforcement agencies were preparing for a possible indictment as early as next week.

Trump called on supporters to protest and "take our nation back" in response to the potential charges, and later wrote, "WE MUST SAVE AMERICA! PROTEST, PROTEST, PROTEST!!!" in another Truth Social post. While some Republicans came to Trump's defense, they did not support his calls for protests in the streets. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and accused the Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office of continuing a partisan "witch hunt" against him.

The investigation centers around a $130,000 made to Daniels in 2016 by Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to influence the presidential election. Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to making the illegal payment and said he did so at Trump’s direction. Trump acknowledged that he repaid Cohen the money but claimed that the amount was legal, stating that it was a private contract between two parties known as a non-disclosure agreement.
