"I argued Kamala Harris sucks at securing our border and, therefore, shouldn't be paid. If my amendment passes, her office will be defunded", Collins posted on X.
As of Nov. 7, 39% of registered voters had a favorable opinion of Harris and 55% had an unfavorable opinion — a net rating of -16 percentage points, according to the LA Times.
Kamala Harris, the first female Vice President of the United States, has been facing consistently low approval ratings since taking office in January 2021.
One of the key factors that may be contributing to Kamala Harris' low approval ratings is her handling of the immigration crisis. Harris was tasked with leading the administration's efforts to address the immigration crisis at the southern border.
Rep. Mike Collins introduced an amendment that would prohibit any funding from being used by the office of the Vice President for salaries and other expenses.
“Kamala Harris has been a failure as vice president from her inability to manage her team effectively, leading to high turnover, to her disastrous job as border czar, where she has failed to secure anything" Collins said.
Since the Biden Harris administration took office, there have been over 6.2 million illegal crossings of our southern border. In September alone, there were 269,735 illegal immigrants encountered at the southern border. That is an increase of over 300%. Since September of 2020, Customs and Border Protection has seized over 27,000 pounds of fentanyl. (Source)
Representative Steny Hamilton Hoyer rose in opposition to the amendment saying:
There are a lot of vice presidents I haven't agreed with. I would have never contemplated offering an amendment to strike their ability to carry out the duties to which they were elected by the American people. They're elected by the people, and they're entitled to the resources to carry out those duties and responsibility given to the American people. I hope this amendment is overwhelmingly rejected. The amendment introduced comes on the heels of the House approving a bill slashing Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg's salary to $1.
