Who doesn't love the word "inspiration"? Do you know anyone who does not want to be inspired? What could be better than to become an inspiration to someone else? To inspire and be inspired is a true achievement for anyone!

Think of what inspiration adds to life! Inspiration makes you want to do more, be more, and become more. To be inspirational is an attribute that makes you want to help others to inspire them.

The definition of inspiration, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is:

Inspiration (noun) 1. the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. 2. a sudden brilliant, creative, or timely idea.

Inspiration is so much more than this simple definition. Because of inspiration, many of us strive to achieve, learn, grow, improve, and become more than we are.

Inspiration influences everything in life. It affects how we do our jobs, every relationship we have, and what we do in and with our lives.

"Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

Helping the uninspired

At the opposite end if being inspired is that of being uninspired. Those uninspired souls in the world have less to look forward to, are often discouraged and depressed, finding little meaning and purpose in life. Do you not feel sad for them? It is heartbreaking.

What the uninspired need is to receive kindness in words and action. Who doesn't want words of encouragement or to be treated with kindness? Like all of us, they seek validation of their worth as human beings. Everyone desires to be honored and respected. Is that too much to ask?

The next time you meet someone down and discouraged, why not inspire them with kind, uplifting, honoring, respectful words? Why not show them kindness through your actions, such as holding the door for them, letting them go before you, or by giving them your full undivided attention?

Showing a little kindness is one of the most inspirational acts you can do every day. All you need to do is be intentional in word and deed.

How to be inspiring

To become as inspiring as possible, let's look at a few things we can do or say to other people:

  • Be kind
  • Be respectful
  • Listen intently
  • Lead by example
  • Be positive
  • Show kindness through your actions
  • Be positive/optimistic
  • Encourage them
"A word of encouragement from a leader can inspire a person to reach her potential." John C. Maxwell (1947)

Becoming inspired

One of the wisest pieces of advice I have read came from an Englishman from the last century. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians lists him as "the most celebrated British music critic in the first half of the 20th century." Where can you find better inspiration than from the world of music!

"The great composer does not set to work because he is inspired, but becomes inspired because he is working. Beethoven, Wagner, Bach and Mozart settled down day after day to the job in hand with as much regularity as an accountant settles down each day to his figures. They didn't waste time waiting for inspiration." Ernest Newman (1868-1959)

Newman's theory has proven correct in my life. Like many, work has proven inspirational. While not as accomplished as some, I was awarded seven patents and developed numerous trade secrets still in use today. Additionally, I have published a book and have written millions of words inspired by decades of experience.

A few ways you can find inspiration are by:

  • Being diligent in your work
  • Gaining experience
  • Attempting to do something you have not tried before
  • Being motivated by someone or something
  • Overcoming self-limiting beliefs
  • Being thankful and appreciative
  • Following role models
  • Turning off outside noise such as television and radio news
  • Turning away from anything negative, especially people
  • Taking breaks
  • Getting real
  • Joining a cause you believe in
  • Volunteering
  • Becoming part of a team
  • Seeking it!
  • Working with a mentor
"A mentor is someone with a willingness to help others, who has a capacity to inspire, a determination to work hard, a clear sense of vision, an inspiring purpose, a deep sense of integrity and an appreciation for joy." Kerry Kennedy (1959-present)

Final thoughts

The subject of inspiration is, well, inspiring, isn't it! To sum up, the best ways to find inspiration are to get busy and seek it out! The world is full of inspiration, and you will undoubtedly find plenty of it simply by working and seeking it! I must reiterate the point that work is crucial to finding inspiration in life with this quote:

"Inspiration comes of working every day." Charles Baudelaire (1821-1967)

Don't wait for inspiration to come to you. Get busy working, and you will find it there!

I leave you with the wise words of a truly inspiring person known as the "First Lady of Song" and the "Queen of Jazz" Lady Ella!

"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong." Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996)
