How determined are you? Are you one of those incredibly determined people who will stop at nothing to get what you want, moving mountains if that is what it takes? Or are you the more subtle type with a strong determination to achieve what you want? You will do what it takes to reach the achievement, just in a less intense way than the first type of person. If you are either of these types of people, you will have an excellent chance of achieving what you are after. Then there are the majority of people in the world. They are somewhat determined. Their ability to achieve diminishes because they are not as clear about what they want and have too many goals. When they achieve something, it does not bring the satisfaction of those who single-mindedly strive for grander achievements in life and succeed.

"Most people fail because they do not have determination and perseverance. Extraordinary people are determined and persevere that is what makes them extraordinary." Catherine Pulsifer

How determined are you?

A person with a strong determination to do something has a different mindset than the average or ordinary person. They have a mindset of doing it and seeing it through to completion. This mindset is of a person who doesn't give up or give in. They stay the course regardless of the circumstances and obstacles of life. They do so with passion.

"Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek." Mario Andretti

The average person has difficulty developing such a mindset because they know what they want but not what they need. They get distracted by too many goals, dividing their time and not staying focused on the one outcome that would make a difference in their life.Throughout life, I have seen each of these mindsets often. The first is a mindset of determination. The second is what I refer to as the undetermined mindset.

"It is your determination and persistence that will make you a successful person." Kenneth J Hutchins

In the mindset of determination, the person is persistent, decisive, strong-willed, resolute, and committed. They have a great deal of courage and a certain amount of stubbornness. They stick with it when the ordinary person gives up. But then, they are not ordinary. They are those who get things done, who achieve more in life and help build a better life for the rest of us.

"Courage is the foundation of determination. Determination and courage are the cornerstones of success." M. K. Soni

For lack of a better word, I call the opposite of the determined mindset the undetermined mindset. In this mindset, the person does not possess an overarching primary desire or goal. In fact, they get distracted by having too many goals. They will build foundations all over town yet never see one through to completion. Using a typical Pareto distribution, those of the undetermined mindset easily consist of 80% of the people, while those with a determined mindset make up the remaining 20% or less. The matter of determination is the difference between the can-do's and the wanna-do's; the successful and unsuccessful in life.

"Replace the words, If Only, with, I Will." Catherine Pulsifer

Developing a mindset of determination

To set up our discussion about what you can do to develop a mindset of determination, let's start with an agricultural analogy. In this analogy, everyone has an equal-sized small field in which they can grow anything they desire. Each has access to the same equipment, weather, and everything else needed to work the land. The only difference is the individual and their decisions about what they do with their land. They are in a free enterprise market where they can choose to grow as much of or as little variety as they wish. This gives them the ability to strive to achieve an optimum yield from their land that can be sold or traded. One approach is to try to grow several things in the field. Each added type of seed planted takes additional effort, requiring different amounts of water, fertilizer, and sunshine. Each plant will have its own need for care, rate of growth, and time of harvest. Because of these variables, the cultivation, planting, fertilizing, watering, care and harvesting add far more complexity with less of any one thing that can be sold or traded. The chance you can develop a passion for what you are doing diminishes since you are so busy, and your attention is so divided.A second approach is to plant a single type of seed throughout the field. It will produce a crop you know will be in demand commanding a fair price or allowing a good trade. This approach greatly simplifies the process, reducing the amount of effort involved while increasing the likelihood of success. By focusing on one thing, you can develop a greater passion for success while using your time and energy more wisely.Life is like this analogy. When you choose one seed to plant and tend to, you will produce a far greater harvest with the same amount of land or, in this case, time or life. The key difference is by choosing one seed to plant and one harvest to reap, you can be far more focused on making it happen. This allows you to become more excited about reaping a large crop and developing your passion for succeeding.

"I ran and ran and ran every day, and I acquired this sense of determination, this sense of spirit that I would never, never give up, no matter what else happened." Wilma Rudolph

Is it becoming clear to you now? Let's lay out the process for developing greater determination.1. By becoming clear about the one thing you want, you can develop a more intense passion, which will increase your chance of success exponentially.2. As you develop a keen interest in this underlying passion, it will fuel your determination to achieve a certain outcome.3. When you develop the determination to not only do but to succeed with this one thing, you strengthen the passion, which in turn strengthens your determination. In no time, you have a chain reaction which, once started, will not stop short of completion. The chain reaction developed will reach a point of no return, in which you will do anything, find a way, go over, under, around, or through any obstacle to achieve what you desire. When you have that kind of commitment and determination, failure is not an option, and success is imminent!

"The great leaders of the past also shared one amazing trait, the incredible power of determination. When others had failed, others had missed opportunities; they had the drive, the resolve, the thirst to make change to their existence." Sonny Kalar

Final words

Without a strong passion for something, you will not make a commitment leading to determination, and you will not stick with it. Your effort will become too divided, and the time you spend much less effective. To make the shift from the undetermined mindset to the determined mindset, find the one thing in life that you can become passionate about. When you find it, determine what you want, and you will start on the road to success. As you develop greater interest and fuel the passion, you will naturally develop the commitment required to create an unwavering mindset of determination.I leave you with a final quote on which to ponder.

"If you are determined to live your best life, given your current circumstances, your life can be more fulfilling and purposeful than you ever thought possible. Be Determined. Be intentional." Mark K Fry, Sr.
