Three California lottery players miss $61,000,000 jackpot by one number

Second-place prizes of $15,613 each are nice. But “The one that got away” would have changed everything.

Nobody won the $61 million jackpot for the California SuperLotto Plus drawing on May 24, 2023.

However, as reported by the California Lottery, three tickets were sold that matched all five of the white ball numbers, but not the Mega number. The purchasers of these tickets will share the second prize of $46,839, each receiving $15,613.

Who were the three second-place prize winners?

As of this writing, all we know is that three tickets matching five winning numbers, but not the “mega” number, have been sold. The purchasers of the winning tickets may not even realize that they have won. No information is available yet about any of the winning ticket holders.

What were the winning — and almost-winning — numbers?

The five “white ball” winning numbers for the May 24, 2023 California SuperLotto Plus drawing #3771 were:

3, 7, 8, 22, and 40.

These were the five numbers matched by the second prize-winning tickets described in this article.

The “mega” number for this drawing was: 7

None of the second prize-winning tickets got this number right. Missing this number reduced a potential $61,000,000 winning ticket to a ticket worth $15,613.

No $61,000,000 ticket was sold. Who sold the three second prize tickets?

Here are the California Lottery retailers that sold each of the second prize tickets:

  • Chevron
  • 7-Eleven
  • Arco AM / PM

The locations for each are shown on the following map. Click the red icons for more information.

SuperLotto Plus compared to Powerball and Mega Millions

Compared to some other states, California’s lottery offerings are somewhat limited. One of many differences involves the national lottery games Powerball and Mega Millions

In other states, players can pay an extra dollar for the Mega Millions Megaplier, or the Powerball Power Play options. These will increase many non-jackpot winnings by as much as ten times.

These options are not available in California.

No Megaplier or Power Play. But SuperLotto Plus is a great alternative

The California Lottery does, however, have a great alternative to Powerball and Mega Millions: SuperLotto Plus. While jackpots don’t reach the stratospheric billion-dollar-plus heights of Powerball and Mega Millions, many are quite worthy of the “life-changing” label. The second prize winners described in this article, for example, were one correct number away from a $61,000,000 prize.
