Each ticket costs $1, wins $36,313 jackpot. No investor would complain about a return like that.
Like the tides, lottery jackpots rise and fall. When the jackpots for the big national lotteries, Powerball and Mega Millions, reach their peaks — sometimes over a billion dollars — the media goes into a frenzy. Long lines form at lottery retailers everywhere.
Eventually somebody wins the colossal prize, and the cycle starts all over again.
Fantasy 5: more frequent jackpots, more happy players
California’s Fantasy 5 lottery behaves this way. However, since there are only five numbers required for a jackpot win, grand prize payouts and jackpot “resets” occur more frequently. Naturally, the prizes are significantly smaller than those in the national lotteries.
A recent Fantasy 5 drawing on May 19, 2023, had three grand prize winners of $200,992 each for a total jackpot of $602,976. Out of the four daily drawings since then, there have been three more winning draws. The modest $72,626 total jackpot on May 23, 2023 took place the day after a slightly “built up” jackpot of $165,489 on May 22, 2023.

California’s Fantasy 5 apparently believes in more jackpots, paid more frequently, than the larger jackpots resulting from long stretches of nobody winning a grand prize. I suspect that those players who win prizes, even more modest ones, appreciate this philosophy.

How would you feel about winning a prize that was a fraction of the previous jackpot?
It’s a classic “Is the cup half full or half empty?” question. I like to think that I would be happy to win a prize no matter what had happened before. I look forward to the opportunity to confirm this!
Let me know in the comments if you feel as I do. Second-prize winners that miss the giant prize by “only one number” may go through some version of this feeling. A nice-sized second prize, it seems, would be a good consolation.
