Stop for gas, complain about the high prices, buy a winning lottery ticket. Not a bad plan. The California Lottery reports that one ticket matching all five numbers for the Fantasy 5 drawing on May 22, 2023 has been sold. That ticket holder can claim the grand prize of $165,489.

We don’t know if whoever bought the winning ticket for the California Fantasy 5 drawing on May 22, 2023 bought gas as well. Maybe they just bought the ticket and moved on. Regardless, assuming they claim their prize, they will have the grand prize of $165,489 to deal with high gas prices in the future.

If you won a big lottery jackpot, would you tell anybody? Who?

I admit to being a little bit of a lottery skeptic. All the excited promotions by the lotteries notwithstanding, the odds against winning anything remotely “life-changing” are vanishingly small. And everybody knows it.

It occurred to me recently that, like most people, I have had countless conversations with others over the years. In all these exchanges, I have never encountered anyone who had won a large lottery jackpot. To my knowledge, I have never known anyone who had any kind of connection with anyone else who won a big prize.

From my direct experience, then, I can say that there is no such thing as “winning the lottery” in a big way. Obviously, this is not the case, but it is my experience. People have walked on the moon, and people have won the lottery, but I have had no contact, direct or otherwise, with any of them.

The flaw in my thinking: who would tell me?

After a little more thought, I realized something else: Maybe someone I know has won the lottery! Why would they tell me?
