California Lottery jackpot resets after a larger payout the day before
If you are going to win the California lottery, your best bet is to win it after the jackpot has had a chance to “build up” for at least several draws without a grand prize winner. Of course, like childbirth and earthquakes, lottery wins just happen when they happen.
So it was for whoever bought the winning ticket for the California Lottery’s Fantasy 5 drawing on May 20, 2023. They got all five numbers correctly, thereby winning the grand prize of $88,015.
Nobody I know would object to an unexpected windfall like this. But where cash is concerned, if some is good, more is better. The same five out of five correct numbers for the same Fantasy 5 game just 24 hours earlier would have yielded a jackpot more than six times larger.
As I explained in my recent article here on NewsBreak, the Fantasy 5 drawing on May 19, 2023 produced three winning tickets worth $200,992 each. Unsurprisingly, after a jackpot of over $600,000, the grand prize for the next day’s drawing was the modest $88,015.
Okay, it wasn’t a huge jackpot, but somebody won it. Who?
Modest or not, I am pretty sure the winner will claim the $88,015. But they haven’t yet, so no information is available as of this writing.
What were the winning numbers?
The winning numbers for California Fantasy 5 drawing #10787 on May 20, 2023 were:
10, 14, 30, 32, and 35
Who sold the winning ticket?
A California food market and lottery retailer, Pothong Market, sold the winning ticket for this drawing. See the map below for the exact location.
Lottery players are paying attention
The California Lottery does not publish total sales figures for the Fantasy 5 game as far as I can tell. But they do publish the number of “Total Winning Tickets” for each drawing. The number of total tickets sold must be in proportion to the winning ticket figures provided.
The number of winning tickets for the May 20 drawing, with the $88,015 jackpot, was 47,472. Compare this to the number of winning tickets shown for the previous drawing on May 19, with the combined jackpot of over $600,000: 163,668, or nearly four times as many.
You can compare these figures on this California Lottery webpage if you like. Be sure to click on the tab for the date of the drawing you want to see.
Clearly, many California Lottery players have figured out how to increase their chances of winning a larger prize: Buy their tickets when the jackpot has had a chance to “roll over” at least several times.
Do you wait for a bigger jackpot?
If you are a lottery player, do you time your purchases in order to increase your chances of winning a bigger prize? It appears that many do just that. Leave a comment if you have an opinion about this kind of strategy.
