What percentage of the “winning tickets” only received a free replay?
The webpage for the May 19, 2023 Fantasy 5 drawing shows the number of “Total Winning Tickets” as 163,668. Of this total, 149,046 qualified for a “prize” of a “Free play.” A little more than 91% of the prizes, then, consisted of a replay.
Only 418, or .26%, of the “Total Winning Tickets” won more than a $13 prize.
Winning the lottery?
“Winning the lottery” has become a catch phrase of sorts, generally taken to mean “life-changing” for those fortunate enough to beat the odds. And we all know that those odds are astronomically high.
I believe that a more realistic summary of prizes and the likelihood of “winning” would be an honorable approach for the California Lottery to take. I doubt if this would impact ticket sales to any great extent.
A more forthright description of the likelihood of winning would also be more consistent with the Lottery’s emphasis on playing responsibly.
