A jackpot of over $600,000 will be split among three lucky California players

The California Lottery reports that three tickets matching all five winning numbers for the May 19, 2023 Fantasy 5 drawing have been sold. Each ticket is now worth $200,992.

Do we know who bought the lucky tickets?

No, at least not yet. As of this writing, no information has been released about the winners’ identities or whether any of them have come forward.

What were the winning numbers?

The five winning numbers for the California Lottery’s Fantasy 5 drawing #10786 on May 19, 2023 were:

6, 11, 14, 23, and 33

Where were the winning tickets sold?

Each of the winning tickets was sold at one of the following California lottery retailers:

  • Miracle Mile Market
  • Kearny Mesa Market
  • CVS

The locations for each can be found on the following map. Click the red icons for more information about each location.

What percentage of the “winning tickets” only received a free replay?

The webpage for the May 19, 2023 Fantasy 5 drawing shows the number of “Total Winning Tickets” as 163,668. Of this total, 149,046 qualified for a “prize” of a “Free play.” A little more than 91% of the prizes, then, consisted of a replay.

Only 418, or .26%, of the “Total Winning Tickets” won more than a $13 prize.

Winning the lottery?

“Winning the lottery” has become a catch phrase of sorts, generally taken to mean “life-changing” for those fortunate enough to beat the odds. And we all know that those odds are astronomically high.

I believe that a more realistic summary of prizes and the likelihood of “winning” would be an honorable approach for the California Lottery to take. I doubt if this would impact ticket sales to any great extent.

A more forthright description of the likelihood of winning would also be more consistent with the Lottery’s emphasis on playing responsibly.

What do you think?

Do you think a free replay should be lumped in with “winning the lottery”? Let me know in the comments if you have an opinion on this.
