Grand prizes in the “match five” games, like California’s Fantasy 5, are frequently won by more than one player. The likelihood of matching five numbers, while still remarkably difficult, is much greater than matching the six required by games like Powerball and Mega Millions.
The jackpots are smaller to begin with in games like Fantasy 5 compared to the larger and more difficult games. When these jackpots are split by multiple winners, the resulting prize amounts may not be as “life-changing” as the winners had hoped.
In this case, the lucky winner gets to claim the entire $582,160. My guess is there won’t be any complaints about this one.

For lottery players: Do you keep track of winnings and losings?
Some years ago, I knew a couple of people who played poker regularly. They were not professional gamblers, but they did seem to take the game seriously. One phrase I remember hearing them use was whether they were “ahead” or “behind” overall. I took this to mean whether they had won more than they had lost or vice versa.
The lottery is different, of course. It’s easy enough to consider a couple of bucks for a lottery ticket or two as just part of your shopping day. Unless they happen to win something, they are forgotten.
When you do have a modest win, maybe $10 or $20 or even $100 or so, do you break out all your old non-winning tickets, add them up, and find out if you are really ahead of the game? Probably not.
Of course, if you are lucky enough to win a real jackpot, you will probably come out way ahead! I guess that is what keeps us in the game.
