The New Jersey Lottery reports that a jackpot-winning ticket for the May 5, 2023 Jersey Cash 5 drawing has been sold. This ticket matched all five winning numbers and is now worth $454,396.

Where was the winning ticket sold?
The winning ticket for the May 5, 2023 Jersey Cash 5 drawing was sold at Food Mart, a New Jersey convenience store and lottery retailer. The location is shown on the map below.
What were the winning numbers?
The New Jersey Lottery press release states the winning numbers for the May 5, 2023 Cash 5 drawing:
“One lucky ticket matched all five numbers drawn winning the $454,396 Jersey Cash 5 jackpot from the Friday, May 5, drawing. The winning numbers were: 02, 08, 16, 24 and 45 and the XTRA number was: 02.”
What about the retailer who sold the ticket? Do they get a commission?
Yes indeed. The same press release states that:
“The retailer will receive a bonus check for $2,000 for the winning ticket sold.”
$454,396 seems like a big jackpot for a “Match 5” type drawing. Is this unusually large?
I did some checking, as I had the same thought. The New Jersey Lottery thoughtfully provides information going back a full year for those of us who wonder about such things. Go to the “Winning Numbers” tab on this page.
Out of 370 Jersey Cash 5 drawings between May 11, 2022 and May 8, 2023, there were:
- Two (2) jackpots greater than $1,000,000
- Twenty-two (22) jackpots greater than $500,000
- Thirty-eight (38) jackpots greater than $250,000
So, the current jackpot of nearly half a million dollars is somewhat unusual for the Jersey Cash 5 lottery but certainly not unheard of. The October 15, 2022 Jersey Cash 5 drawing came close to two million dollars at $1,932,360.00.
There was a total of eighty-six (86) non-zero jackpots, ranging in size from $50,000 to $1,932,360. This represents 23.2% of the 370 drawings in the last year.
How do these numbers sound to you? Is Jersey Cash 5 a good game to play?
I have been writing about the various state lotteries for some time now. I get the impression that, just like competing stores or competing brands, they all sort of “keep an eye” on each other in order to remain competitive. I would guess that odds and prizes for the New Jersey Lottery are comparable with those of other states, although I have not done a detailed comparison.
