California Lottery announces the sale of two tickets worth $101,957 each

A six-figure prize winning lottery ticket, like a six-figure income, is nothing to sneeze at. Even after years of inflation, all those zeroes still indicate a worthwhile sum.

Two California lottery players each bought such a ticket in the California Lottery’s Fantasy 5 drawing for May 6, 2023. Their tickets each matched all five numbers, winning the jackpot six-figure prize of $101,957 for each player.

Who were the two fortunate souls that bought the winning tickets?

We don’t know yet since no information about the winners’ identities has been released.

What were the winning numbers?

The winning numbers for the California Fantasy 5 drawing on May 6, 2023 were:

18, 19, 26, 30, and 36

Where were the winning tickets sold?

Each of the two winning tickets was sold at a California convenience store:

  • Sunrise Market & Gas
  • Manneh's Alta Dena Dairy

Do you enjoy the lottery as a form of entertainment, even if you have never won a big prize?

This is a common attitude among many people who play regularly. Just the possibility, however remote, of instant and unexpected riches provides much of the excitement that sporting events and movies provide for others.

At least that is the theory, although it seems safe to say that everyone who buys a lottery ticket or a scratcher card would prefer the kind of outcome seen in my lottery articles on NewsBreak. For example, who wouldn’t trade places with the lucky player I recently wrote about who won $25,000 a year for life?

The fact that some people are winning lottery prizes fuels the excitement

This is no secret — the various state lotteries routinely publish stories about their happy and enthusiastic winners. Hopefully, everyone realizes that their chances of a big win are remote. But the fact that some people do win keeps the excitement alive.

This, in turn, keeps the ticket and game sales going. As long as players enjoy the game whether they win or not, it’s a “win-win” situation.

Lottery players getting into financial trouble by going overboard with lottery purchases will detract from this happy picture, of course. The lotteries, to their credit, do encourage what they call “playing responsibly.”
