Somebody is $1 million richer thanks to a winning Mega Millions lottery ticket. According to the Texas State Lottery, somebody in the state matched five out of five white ball numbers in the Tuesday, May 9, 2023 Mega Millions drawing.
While not a jackpot winner, the ticket was good enough to earn the ticket holder the second-place prize of a cool million dollars.
The Mega Millions jackpot for the drawing was an estimated $83 million (cash value of $43.7 million). Because nobody won the jackpot, it will roll over to the next drawing and will be worth an estimated $99 million.
What were the winning numbers for the May 9 Mega Millions drawing?
The Mega Millions website publishes the winning numbers for each drawing on their previous drawings page. You can check your lottery tickets there for this and any past Mega Millions drawing.
Or you can watch this short video which shows the numbers selected for the May 9 drawing:
Where was the winning Mega Millions ticket sold?
The winning lottery player purchased their quick pick Mega Millions ticket at Walmart Supercenter #1494 in Texas. You can check out the exact location on the map below.
That $1 million could have been $3 million
While $1 million is certainly a nice win, the ticket holder could have tripled their winnings. Had the ticket holder opted to purchase the Megaplier feature for an extra $1 per play, they would have won $3 million because the Megaplier for the drawing was 3.
According to the Texas Lottery, here’s how the Megaplier feature works:
“Megaplier® Prize Amount - Any non-grand/jackpot prize you win in a Mega Millions play will be multiplied by the Megaplier number drawn if you have purchased the Megaplier feature. Beginning with the October 22, 2013 drawing, the second-tier prize (Match 5 + 0) is increased by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times when Megaplier is purchased.”
Do you add the Megaplier feature to your Mega Millions tickets?
Some people feel it’s worth it to add an extra dollar per play in the hopes of multiplying their winnings. Of course, if you’re on a tight budget (like many of us are), adding an extra dollar per play could start to add up.
