What is a “Fast Play” lottery game?
The lotteries continue to evolve in their ongoing search for new and interesting kinds of games. The Illinois Lottery now includes Fast Play games in its offerings.
When we think of “the lottery,” many of us think of the traditional draw-type games such as Powerball, Mega Millions, and the various state Lotto and other draw games. Winning numbers are determined by a scheduled drawing. Players have no way of knowing whether their ticket will win anything until the drawing takes place.
The first “instant winner” -type games, the so-called “scratcher” games, are extremely popular alternatives to the draw games. Simply scratching hidden numbers and symbols allows a player to know immediately if their game is a winner.
Fast Play games combine aspects of draw and scratcher games
Like the draw games, Fast Play games are generated at point of sale as they are purchased. Unlike the draw games, their “won or lost” status is also known when they are purchased.
And unlike scratcher games, the “system” knows when a winning game has been sold. This in turn allows the tracking of winning games that have been sold but not claimed yet, such as the one described here.
The Illinois Lottery FAQ offers this definition of their Fast Play games:
“Fast Play games are quick and easy draw games that can be played at any time. There are a variety of Fast Play games offered at various price points and play styles to appeal to all players. With Fast Play, there are no numbers to pick, no play slip to complete, no scratching, and no waiting for winning numbers. You can win prizes any time.”

Have you played any of the Fast Play games?
Fast Play lottery games are not available where I live, so I have not had a chance to try them. If you have, you can leave a comment if you would like to share your opinion of them. They do sound like fun, but the bottom line is the same as all the others: Did you win anything?
