This new cash assistance program gives $500 a month for a full year to participants.

A city in Los Angeles County has just announced they are now accepting applications for a new guaranteed income program. The program aims to help individuals who are financially struggling as a result of the pandemic.

The city of El Monte launched their guaranteed income program that will provide “no strings attached” cash assistance to 125 eligible residents. Participants will receive the $500 monthly payments via a debit card that the city will issue and will reload with each month’s payment.

The program will last for twelve months and the full amount each recipient will receive will be $6,000. Recipients can use the money to pay for goods and services at any location that accepts debit cards.

According to the program’s Frequently Asked Questions document, there are no work requirements to participate in the program and recipients can spend the money as they choose. The money is meant to supplement and not replace the recipient’s current sources of income.

This short video from Fox 11 Los Angeles highlights some of the details of the program.

Guaranteed income program requirements

There are several eligibility restrictions for the program. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a current El Monte resident
  • Be a female head of household (single status, no partner or spouse present)
  • Have children between the ages of 0 and 17 living in your household
  • Be able to verify your income is at or below the federal poverty line
  • Be able to show you were impacted by the pandemic

In addition, applicants who are eligible and are selected to participate will need to submit various forms and documentation.

This includes proof of residency, school enrollment forms for each school-aged child living in your household, proof of income, a government issued ID, and a form stating all public assistance programs in which you are currently enrolled.

There might be other types of documentation that you’ll need to submit to the program. For a complete list of program requirements and documentation, you can go to the City of El Monte Guaranteed Income website or review the program’s FAQ page.

The selection process

The RAND research team will randomly select 125 participants via a lottery process. The participants will be selected from those applicants that meet the eligibility requirements and submit an application by the enrollment deadline.

If you’re interested, you’ll need to apply soon

The window of opportunity for this program is short, so if you’re interested, you’ll need to get your application in soon. The program must receive your application by April 15, 2023.

You can submit your application online, in person, or by mail. For complete details on how to apply, go to the El Monte Guaranteed Income website.
